I did pretty well at the grocery store this week. I ended up at ONE (!!) store. That in itself was a nice treat. A few weeks ago I decreased my weekly budget from $60/week to $50/week and it is going well. I wasn't having to pinch pennies much on $60/week so I felt we could afford to decrease our budget. It is harder to fit everything in to $50/week but we are certainly not suffering!
My total bill this week was $50.42 and I saved 53%. I bought:
5 lbs ground beef 80/20 (store sale)
5 lbs 7 bone steak (I use it for pot roast) (store sale)
1 lb bacon (manager's special)
3 boxes Annie's Macaroni and Cheese (store sale)
3 lbs organic apples (store sale)
4 lbs organic carrots
1 pineapple (store sale)
1.5 lbs blueberries (store sale)
4 lbs 31-40 shrimp (store sale)
2 cucumbers (store sale)
3 lbs bananas (store sale)
We have been eating a lot of apples and carrots recently. I prefer to buy apples at $.50/lb or less, but the lowest I've seen lately is $.69/lb. Today, though, I found a 3 lb bag of organic apples for $3 or $1/lb. I was surprised to find such a deal! The conventional apples were $1.49/lb! Encouraged by that find I checked the price on carrots. A 2lb bag of conventional carrots was $1.49 (my preferred price is $1.28 or lower), but a 2 lb bag of organic carrots was $1.69! The carrot prices were the normal, non-sale price. I also checked the price of bananas and organic bananas were only $.30 more per pound (I don't bother with organic bananas because you peel them anyway).
I rarely even bother to check organic prices, but I learned my lesson today!

2 Thoughts From Others:
that's funny, I would never expect to see organic prices cheaper than regular...great idea to check!
haha - reason number 2 why I need to rent a husband that shops like you. grocery store tonight after 12 hours at work and kickboxing - 3 apples; 5 bannanas; 1 lb of cherries; 1 box of Nutragrain bars; 4 canned soups; 12 mini-gatorades; 4 pounds of chocolate to keep everyone happy at work (I keep a candy dish on my desk and usually stay out of); dishwasher soap; toothpaste; cat litter. Yeah - $60. That's why I need to rent a husband! Sigh :)
